Box Furnaces
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right chamber size and temperature rating?
Compare your required process temperature with the model’s rated range, then check the chamber’s internal dimensions against your sample vessels. Capacity alone does not show whether a vessel will fit. Thermolyne™ Small Benchtop Muffle Furnaces are available in two capacities and provide single-setpoint temperature control to 1100°C. Review the specifications for your selected configuration before ordering.
Which box furnace should I consider for ashing or heat treatment?
Start with models whose listed applications match your process. Thermolyne™ Small Benchtop Muffle Furnaces are recommended for ashing organic and inorganic samples, heat treating small steel parts, ignition tests, and gravimetric analysis. Thermolyne™ Premium Large Muffle Furnaces also list ashing and gravimetric analysis. Compare temperature, chamber dimensions, and controller options before selecting a configuration.
Do I need a single-setpoint or programmable controller?
Choose according to the heating sequence your application requires. On Thermolyne™ Premium Large Muffle Furnaces, B1 control supports a single ramp to setpoint and a dwell. C1 control stores one program with eight segments; D1 control stores four programs with 16 segments per program. Compare these options when your process requires multiple heating and holding stages.
What safety features should I check before buying a box furnace?
Check the safeguards listed for the exact model and controller. Thermolyne™ Premium Large Muffle Furnaces include a door switch that stops power to the heating elements when opened and thermocouple break protection. B1, C1, and D1 configurations also use a mechanical overtemperature-protection relay. Electrical connection requirements vary: the product page specifies a conduit connection for models other than F6010 and F6018.
Can I add shelves or replace furnace components?
Check the accessory’s stated furnace compatibility and temperature limit before adding it. The Premium Large Muffle Furnace page lists an optional stainless-steel shelf with a maximum temperature of 900°C. The Small Benchtop Muffle Furnace page lists separately available heating elements and thermocouples. Browse Box Furnace Accessories, then confirm the required model and part number.
